Colour

Dense, dark purple with bluish reflections and a delicate haze.

Nose

The nose reveals a steely, cool structure. The fruit appears berry-like and concentrated. Blackberry, elderberry, and cassis dominate. Plum, rosehip, and fig are only marginally inferior. Barberry, violet, and pansy add accents. Its spiciness is restrained. Currant bushes, undergrowth, and freshly broken branches are prominent. Damp forest floor, moss, and a hint of mushrooms provide depth, while eucalyptus adds an ethereal freshness.

Palate

The first sip confirms these impressions. Dark, cool, and dense. It appears silky and elegant. Its acidity is present at a medium level, but not overt. With a perceived lack of tannins, the fruit is in the foreground. Tart and fresh. Extremely elegant and taut for this warm region. It offers a rock-solid, high-quality wine without excessive complexity. Unpretentious.

Entirely sourced in Lutzmannsburg—and to be renamed as Lutzmannsburger from the 2021 vintage onward—the 2020 Moric Reserve is a Burgenland Blaufränkisch that opens with a deep and spicy, seductively fine but also intense and complex nose of dark and red fruits intertwined with spicy phenols and earthy terroir notes. Smooth yet also clear, refined and fresh on the palate, with silky tannins and a noble, saline acidity, this is a tight but elegant and straightforward Blaufränkisch with the charm and finesse of a great Gamay. The tannins are remarkably fine and crunchy here and intermingled with salinity and mineral freshness. Rarely have I tasted a Blaufränkisch with this purity, finesse and elegance. 13% stated alcohol. Tasted in Lech in December 2022.
