Wine Information

The Emilio Valerio winery is located in Tierra Estella, the coolest subzone of the northern Spanish DO Navarra. It cultivates around 40 hectares of vineyards according to biodynamic criteria, spread across 70 plots. Limestone and sandstone soils, as well as vineyards at elevations of up to 700 meters, are the defining terroir characteristics. The 2016 Usuaran red wine is made from 100% Graciano, a grape variety normally only used as a blend in Rioja wines, but has recently become increasingly popular as a solo wine. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 550 meters, and the wine was aged for 24 months in new and used French barriques.

Nose

The Usuaran 2016 presents itself with an intense aroma of ripe berries, dried figs, and caramel. A hint of violet also permeates. Overall, the nose has a good balance of freshness, fruit, and spice.

Palate

On the palate, this red wine is opulent and fleshy. It offers ripe berry aromas (as on the nose) and, thanks to its polished tannins, a soft mouthfeel. At the same time, and this is one of the strengths of the Graciano grape variety, it has a present acidity and is well structured overall, giving the wine the necessary tension and a stable backbone despite its maturity. The spicy notes from the barrique aging are present in the taste, but well integrated, and contribute to the aromatic complexity. The finish also has a nice length.
