Information about the wine

Like many great vineyards that have been known and famous for great wines for centuries, the name Ölberg also refers to a former monastery and its biblical reference. The fact that the wines from the Ölberg have the densest viscosity and a particularly high proportion of essential oils certainly contributed to the naming. The Ölberg is the winery’s southernmost vineyard on the Roter Hang. It runs east-west in the central area of the Roter Hang as a widely extending main vineyard and is the only one of our Roter Hang vineyards with a full south exposure. The rocky soil is heavily fractured, making vineyard work arduous. Our vineyard has a gradient of more than 60% and is considered a classic steep slope. While the rocky ridges rise to the surface in the Rothenberg and Pettenthal, the soil in the Ölberg is more porous and permeable. The red clay slate has been worn down over millions of years and has essentially replaced the humus layer. The south-facing plot thus acts as an ideal heat reservoir, allowing the grapes to reach their full physiological ripeness evenly.

Radiant, light golden yellow.

Nose

The aroma of the 2022 Nierstein Ölberg is concentrated and dense: orange, orange oil, lemon, Mediterranean herbs, spicy notes of herbs and undergrowth. An extremely profound and mystical fragrance, full of intensity.

Palate

Juicy, dense, even oily on the palate, with plenty of yellow fruit and citrus paired with saltiness and invigorating acidity. A concentrated yet cool, invigorating wine, at the very beginning of its development, with tremendous potential for further development. Perfect with shellfish and fish dishes, and anything from the sea! Be sure to decant and enjoy from large glasses, not too cold.

The 2022 Riesling Niersteiner Ölberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special parcel of re-cultivated vines planted in 1991. The nose still carries some reduction, a flinty whiff. Underneath that is serene, tangerine and tart yellow peach fruit. Zestiness fills the mouth with ripe, aromatic fruit with overtones of grapefruit and white pepper spice. The finish is serene, tingling but also rounded and balanced. (Bone-dry)
