Product description for Château de Coulaine Bonnaventure AOC 2019 (bio)
Wine Information
The Bonnaventure – named after the owner family – is a Cabernet Franc that comes from a vineyard directly behind the château. The vines are planted on a south-facing plateau of 2.8 hectares with yellow tuff and gray sand in the topsoil. The Cabernet is vinified in cuves of 60 hectoliters.
Colour
Cherry red
Nose
The Bonnaventure smells exactly like you would expect from a Cabernet Franc from Chinon. It’s the lively blend of cherries, cassis, and blackberries, the hint of smoke and crushed flint, the bouquet of garden herbs with a touch of thyme, juniper, and salt that makes the wine extremely appetizing.
Palate
On the palate, the Bonnaventure appears round and full, juicy and earthy. The tannins are fine and round, the dark fruit full-bodied and ripe, but also crisp and fresh in parts. It is an intense and lively Chinon with a firm core of lively acidity, dark, firm chocolate, some forest soil, leaves and undergrowth, with a touch of graphite, rock and juniper, which gives the whole a cool touch. Here, too, the tannins remain pleasantly present and shape the wine, while a touch of salt has a pleasant mouthwatering effect. The four years of aging after the harvest have already given the Chinon a very beautiful structure and balance.

From calcareous sand and clay soils directly behind the château, the 2019 Chinon Bonnaventure offers a deep and intense yet pure, fresh and authentic sour cherry and sauerbraten nose with yeasty, “low-sulfur” and discreet flinty notes. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this is a silky-textured and vital Chinon with fine and ripe tannins and a tart, lemon-bitter and round finish. Although the wine is already accessible, I think the bitter and round elements will better intertwine after aging in bottle a while. Tasted in June 2021.

The 2019 Bonnaventure lacks pleasure with its reductive, smoky bacon, drying character and chewy texture – I also have a question mark over whether there’s brett here as there’s leather and medicinal characters alongside that drying character. Tasted over two days with little change. No second bottle sent.
