Product description for Charles Joguet Clos de la Dioterie AOC 2011

Wine Information

The Clos de la Dioterie is the domaine’s most famous vineyard. It was first mentioned in the Middle Ages, when it was still fully enclosed, and is located not far from the Vienne River, directly on the winery’s edge. The relatively flat vineyard has a clay topsoil and limestone and mica subsoil. The vines are 90 to 100 years old. The Cabernet Franc undergoes a cool pre-fermentation for ten days at 10°C. The skin maceration in wooden vats lasts around four weeks at temperatures not exceeding 21°C. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the first-run wines and the best press wines are blended for malolactic fermentation. The French oak barrels are partially replaced every year, so that around one-fifth of the barrels are new and one- to four-year-old. The vintages then mature for 15 to 16 months in wood, a further six months in tanks for harmonization, and are then bottled.

Colour

Quite dark garnet red with a light brick-red rim

Nose

In the 2011 Clos de la Dioterie, the primary fruit has largely disappeared. The Chinon from the monopoly vineyard appears tobacco-like, slightly nutty, and tart with mint, a touch of green pepper and beans, leather, and some sous-bois.

Palate

On the palate, the wine offers a subtle extract sweetness with quite a lot of body, power, and a still very present tannin, which, typical of the vintage, allows a hint of green to shine through. The fruit is ripe and offers a creamy texture, punctuated by a present acidity. A beautiful Chinon with power and firmness while maintaining transparency, old-school in the best sense of the word.

Wine Advocate

Score: 93

From a vintage with a very warm summer and rainy September, the monopole 2011 Chinon Clos de la Dioterie is more earthy on the nose and displays some green asparagus and also oaky notes. Soft and elegant on the palate, with good finesse and vegetal flavors, this is a very elegant, balanced and gastronomic Cabernet with a juicy and floral finish that exhibits violet and licorice flavors. The tannins are fine and juicy, and the wine is stimulating and very, very elegant.

Vinous

Score: 92+?

Deeply saturated ruby. Rich aromas of cassis, licorice and menthol. Plush and unctuous but nonetheless elegant, displaying complex flavors of raspberry, black cherry, tobacco and menthol. With of touch of wild herbs on the finish, this cabernet franc has the supple core to support its ripe tannins, which allows this extremely young wine to begin to express itself. The only question mark I have is the somewhat higher level of alcohol: 14% is unusual for a Joguet wine. Having gone through a longer period of unification in stainless steel after maturation in barrel, it was only bottled in January of 2014. 6,000 produced.
