Product description for Cinque Campi Rio degli Sgoccioli, Spumante dell’Emilia IGT 2020 (bio)Rio degli Scoggioli is a special wine: Made from the Barghi variety, one of the many varieties and variations of Lambrusco, it is something of a dinosaur. Only three hectares of this almost extinct variety remain, which was made into spumante using the classic method. It is approved for use in Lambrusco Reggiano and Emilia Lambrusco and comes from the Vanni Nizzoli vineyards in Cinque Campi, south of Reggio Emilia. The variety was always considered to be of extremely high quality and valued for its resistance to botrytis and its high potential must weight. However, its thick skins and the resulting low juice yield slowly caused it to disappear from the scene. Fermented in steel tanks with three days of maceration on the skins, the wine aged for six months in stainless steel vats and then for one year on its natural fine lees in the bottle. Only 1,333 bottles were produced.

Ruby red with bright reflections and fine perlage.

Nose

The nose of the 2020 Rio degli Scoggioli from Vanni Nizzoli’s Azienda Agricola Cinque Campi practically bursts with massive red fruit, which aromatically outlines it all-encompassingly. It sparkles almost boldly in rich ruby, yet always appears tartly contoured. The omnipresent cherry and red currants are complemented by elderberries and cranberries, as well as vegetal notes of blackberry and currant leaves.

Palate

It presents itself invigoratingly tart on the palate and shines with the finest mousse and extract-rich fruit on a crystal-dry finish. Edged with fine phenolics, it has a clear, well-defined palate and is accelerated by the finely bubbled carbonation, which also pushes the aromatics toward a more bitter note. A stimulating, mature Lambrusco for serious food pairing.
