Product description for Hajszan Neumann Grüner Veltliner Ried Steinberg 1.ÖTW 2022 (bio)
Info
The winter dragged on for a long time in 2022. However, spring began promptly and immediately with summery warmth. Bud break is therefore later, but all the faster than usual. Flowering was already reached in mid-June and was accompanied by great weather. A sunny and dry summer followed, taking its toll as early as the end of July. Numerous drought damages were detected in the young vineyards. August then brought the longed-for cooler temperatures at night and good rainfall. With stable acidity levels, the fruit was still able to develop. A mixed, rainy September presented many challenges during the harvest. The vines in the Steinberg vineyard are located in Grinzing, an extension of the Vienna Nussberg. Weathered limestone with a high lime content and medium clay content form this basis. The harvest is followed by a six-hour maceration period before gentle pressing. The pre-clarified must is then spontaneously fermented in stainless steel with natural yeasts. After fermentation, the wine matures on the fine lees.
Colour
Sparkling lemon yellow with green reflections
Nose
The Grüner Veltliner from the Steinberg vineyard is characterized by a very subtle, profound character. I immediately notice kaffir lime leaves and bergamot zest. Meyer lemon and green tea provide it with deep, tart, and honest elements. The fruit is extremely subtly represented. Honeydew melon and nashi pear also stand out. Rather, coriander, lemongrass, mint, and lemon balm are fully evident. Fresh seeds and cress. There are hints of cold smoke and a fine earthy component.
Palate
The first sip immediately underlines its superior quality. It appears incredibly bright and chalky. This austere sensation lingers for a long time. Don’t worry, a little melt and punch will gradually develop on the palate. The acidity, while moderate, still packs a punch. Its fruit is unpretentious and mature. It strikes a balance between the herbal spice, which comes across with plenty of momentum, and subtle, spicy accents. White pepper, coriander seed, fennel pollen, and allspice lead the way. These aromas linger for minutes on the finish. They’re absolutely harmonious. The chalky note also comes through again at the end.
