Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: Clos Häuserer is a small monopoly vineyard located below the Grand Cru Hengst in the municipality of Wintzenheim. Its 1.2 hectares were planted 100% with Riesling by my father, Léonard Humbrecht, in 1973. It lies on a calcareous bedrock dating back to the Oligocene period. The soil is formed by the erosion of the older limestones (oolithic) found in the Vosges Mountains during the second epoch. These limestone pebbles were then cemented into an iron-rich sandstone that also contains some marl. We call them conglomeratic limestones or coastal limestones (it is the sea that eroded these rocks). These soils are very interesting because they contain a high proportion of rock elements (limestone, sandstone, etc.) and finer elements such as marl, which make them very drought-resistant. They also have a rich mineral composition. Clos Häuserer lies at the foot of the hill and boasts particularly rich topsoil with a slightly higher marl content. This is noticeable in the wines, as the clay content lends a certain roundness and enjoyment to a wine that can be fantastic in the early years.
Colour
Bright golden yellow.
Nose
The 2022 Riesling Clos Häuserer presents itself slender and playful on the nose, with distinct aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit, and green apple combined with cool, chalky notes. Aeration in the decanter catapults the scent of ginger, anise, and dried pastries to the fore, as well as mussel shells and seaweed.
Palate
This lively freshness on the palate is fascinating; the acidity is brilliant, again in combination with the citrus fruits of the nose and a salty hint. Its backbone is juicy and long-lasting; its subtle bitterness combined with the salty citrus freshness in the long aftertaste stimulates the appetite for dishes with fresh ingredients and concentrated sauces. If you want to enjoy it now, be sure to decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to gain more expression.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
From a gentle-sloping, east-facing vineyard planted in 1973, the 2022 Clos Häuserer Wintzenheim Riesling was still a bit reductive when I tasted it at the domaine in April 2024, yet the wine was also clear and pure as well as aromatic on the stony nose that intermingled ripe and concentrated fruit with the spicy notes of the calcareous marl terroir. Lush yet fine and elegant on the palate, this is a dense and intense, tightly structured Riesling with a long and intense mineral finish. The 2022 fermented fully dry to one gram per liter of residual sugar and comes in with 13.4% alcohol. Natural cork.

The 2022 Riesling Clos Häuserer is harvested at the bottom of the Hengst Grand Cru, on deep marl soils with clay, all the finer elements deposited from the decomposition of the Hengst. Ripe, juicy pear shines on the nose, edged with fine lemon peel. The palate is succulent, dripping with Mirabelle and lemon. The longer this is in the mouth, the more intense it gets. Yet the finish is relatively mild and smooth but imbued with that gorgeous grapefruit notion. (Bone-Dry)
