Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg 2019 (bio)
Wine Information
The Rotenberg vineyard lies on the west to northwest side of the Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim, on red-coloured limestone (siliceous marl from the Oligocene). The topsoil is very thin, partly due to the steep slope, but the limestone is also relatively poor. Rotenberg is a relatively late-ripening vineyard, considering the early ripening of the site. Certainly, both the altitude and the northwest exposure contribute to significantly slowing the sugar rise in this fast-ripening grape variety.
Vine Information
In the past, this was a preferred location for the production of Spätlese-style wines. Today, earlier harvests and much drier weather are pushing for much drier wines, and the Rotenberg estate has adapted excellently to this change in style. Production is very low. The vines display beautiful vigor but bear a very small number of grapes, which in turn are very small. As a result, the wines from Rotenberg, especially in 2019, have a solid structure. Fermenting slowly, the wild yeasts ultimately managed to ferment this wine absolutely bone dry, to the great satisfaction of the winery!
Colour
Bright and intense golden yellow.
Nose
The powerful character of the 2019 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is already noticeable on the nose. In addition to aromas of beetroot, boxwood, pepper, and walnuts, a juicy impression of oranges and mango emerges. After some aeration, meadow herbs and broom join in, along with hints of anise and coriander.
Palate
It seems to float on the tongue, a very elegant yet firm impression with a distinctive saltiness and extremely invigorating acidity. Olivier Humbrecht has succeeded in conjuring a Riesling-like acidity structure in his Pinot Gris without denying the grape variety. A wonderful, brilliant Pinot Gris that can age for decades and is already a source of immense pleasure! If you want to enjoy it now, you should definitely decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to gain in expression.
