Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2019 (bio)
Christina Hilker: Freshness is also the motto on the palate. Its acidity makes it invigourating and never overly satiating. The fruit is juicy and charming, the finish characterized by piquant spice – a wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, preferably with nutty and spicy components. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses (Olivier Humbrecht).
Wine Information
All of the Pinot Gris vineyards located on limestone geology on the domaine actually have the status of single vineyards (Clos Windsbuhl, Clos Jebsal, Heimbourg, and Rotenberg). In most vintages, this wine is made from the young Pinot Gris vines planted on Clos Windsbuhl in the early 1990s. In some years, the decision was made to add other vineyards. In 2019, the production of Clos Jebsal, Clos Windsbuhl, and Heimbourg was added to Roche Calcaire. These vineyards produced some very fine wines, although unfortunately not all of them were dry.
Aging Info
In order to deliver not only a high-quality wine but also a consistent style, it was decided to age them all together after fermenting individually. The end result is a wine that is barely dry and carries great acidity, which is to be expected from such vineyards. Just as with the Pinot Gris wines from single vineyards, it was decided that an additional six months of ageing on the full lees would give the wine more character and complexity.
Colour
Bright golden yellow with delicate green highlights.
Nose
The 2019 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is delicate and fragrant, with chalky notes beautifully present, and it demands a carafe to reveal aromas of peach, nectarine, and quince. Fragrant blossoms and a hint of anise and ginger are also present. The whole is permeated by a fine minerality and a scent reminiscent of mussel shells.
Palate
Elegant and creamy, it glides over the tongue, with a subtle salty note and elegant acidity that is perfectly woven into the fruity carpet. A delicate wine and excellent food accompaniment, with flashes of citrus and ginger in the finish. It pairs perfectly with dishes with fresh, citrusy influences. It has very good aging potential for the coming years. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.
