Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2021 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Pinot Gris is planted in the upper part of the Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim. It faces west and is located on a steep slope, where it enjoys a relatively cool climate and is exposed to the valley winds. Unlike the Rotenberg, which lies on the other side of the valley, the Heimbourg vineyard receives a few more hours of sun in the evening, which probably explains why the vineyard produces more aromatic wines. The Oligocene limestone soil here is a complex combination of ancient oolitic pebbles cemented into an aggressive, ferruginous limestone (red colour). The influence on the wine is profound.
Vineyard Information
Pinot Gris is a fantastic grape variety, but like its brother, Pinot Noir, it needs a strong influence of the terroir to produce great wines. In 2021, the harvest was unfortunately very small. The grapes were healthy and allowed for a very dry fermentation of the wine.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2021 Pinot Gris Heimbourg presents itself with a fresh impression on the nose. Young pear, peach, and grapefruit characterize the opening. At this youthful stage, it should definitely be sufficiently aerated, then subtle flint and smoky notes, along with some light tobacco, unfold – a truly aristocratic opening, very stimulating.
Palate
The opening is invigoratingly fresh, with fine fruit accompanied by refreshing acidity. A truly invigorating Pinot Gris, which is how Pinot Gris from Alsace should always be. The wonderful flow tempts you to have another glass, making it an excellent food accompaniment. At the same time, it harbors fantastic aging potential that is waiting to be discovered. Magnificent tension! Aerate and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses, not too cold.
