Description
Product description for Heinrich Gabarinza 2018 (bio)
What Gernot and Heike have built over the past few years is beyond remarkable! He started with one hectare of his own vineyard and now cultivates over 100 hectares around Gols and on the Leithaberg. All vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Years ago, Gernot demonstrated the potential of Gols’s vineyards with the legendary Salzberg, but also with the Pannobile. From his home in Gols, he always had his eye on the Leithaberg. He began buying grapes from there early on, but it wasn’t until 2006 that he was able to acquire the vineyards from his grape supplier. In the cellar, everything is set up to ensure the grapes and wines are processed as gently as possible. Fermentation and aging usually take place in wood and, increasingly, in amphorae; even the whites are often skin-fermented and minimally sulfurized, yet still possess the typical Heinrich precision and purity.
Colour
The wine presents itself in a dark ruby red with a violet rim and an opaque core, clear and brilliant in the glass.
Nose
Nestled on warm-hearted fruit such as rosehip, blueberry, and, with its astringency, sloe, this delicate marriage of Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and Merlot grapes is nevertheless an unshakable rock in the surf. Delicately smoky spice from cedarwood, cocoa shell, and tobacco leaf fill the wine with volume, warmth, and depth. With patience, air, and a large glass, after some time, an aromatic path leads over forest floors covered in moss and porcini mushrooms, as well as autumn leaves, to exactly where the pepper grows.
Palate
On the palate, the Gabarinza from Heike and Gernot Heinrich comes into its own. It is full-bodied, powerful, and fleshy; This, however, is defined rather than pompous, and thus at peace with itself; not least thanks to the captured freshness of the vintage. Its tannins, in their tightness and precision, resemble the masterpieces of Persian carpet weaving. Except that for all its density and ornamentation, this carpet is actually a floating one, skillfully defying gravity. Unless, of course, it flows down the connoisseur’s throat.
