Marian Henß:It enters the palate tightly woven and concentrated. Melting tannins combine with a cool minerality and a high fruit concentration. A fine extract lingers on the teeth and underlines the density of this wine. Despite all the superlatives, this wine remains true to the style of Philippe Gimel and its terroir. La Pierre Noire still exudes a silky mouthfeel and a dark, cool elegance. Subtle bitter tones contrast with a taut acidity. This vitalizes the wine immensely and signals its high ageing potential. Tart chocolate, mint, and nuances of licorice spread across the palate after every sip. The dark fruit, the spices, and herbs of the nose dance together in a wonderfully synchronized ballet. Each step is coordinated and well-considered. And so the finish is long and elegant.

Colour

The name says it all. The “Pierre Noire” appears in the glass with a black core, dark violet, and ruby red.

Nose

The aromas continue in an equally dark manner. A cherry compote with cloves and cinnamon sticks is simmering. The scent of crushed black pepper, mustard seeds, and a touch of paprika wafts from the spice drawer. After decanting and swirling, prunes and figs are added, as well as the sublimity of dark chocolate, Assam tea, and cedarwood. A panorama of aromas that stretches far and wide…

Palate

On the palate, the 2018 Saint Jean du Barroux “La Pierre Noire” is rich and ponderous. The heaviness that the nose suggests is replaced by density and is pleasantly balanced. Philippe Gimel’s Black Rock, not Black Peter, is powerful but alive with a calming power. A clenched fist interpretation of Grenache and Syrah.
