Description

Product description for Nittnaus Anita & Hans Ried Freudshofer Jois, Leithaberg DAC 2020 (bio)

Wine Information

The hand-picked grapes for this Chardonnay come from the Freudshofer vineyard in Jois. This is an extremely calcareous site in the Leitha Mountains with a southerly exposure. The Chardonnay was pressed as whole bunches, fermented spontaneously, and aged on the full lees in 800-liter wooden barrels for ten months.

Colour

Rich straw yellow

Nose

The Chardonnay from the Freudshofer vineyard is a finely chiseled Chardonnay that combines some of the reduction notes so typical today with those of lime and lemon juice and zest, crisp apples, a touch of hay, oats, and crushed lime.

Palate

On the palate, one has the impression that the reductive notes are even more present than on the palate. This is, however, a great pleasure; because these cracker-flake aromas combine with a hint of brioche, butter, and lemon cream, without being opulent in the true sense of the word. The clear, lean acidity and fine minerality ensure this. In the long finish, the Freudshofer is a juicy, slightly citrusy, silky Chardonnay with volume, depth, and a clear structure.

Wine Advocate

Score: 89

The 2020 Chardonnay Ried Freudshofer shows a clear, highly reductive and still very restrained but dense nose. Fresh and elegant on the palate, but currently showing little depth or complexity, this is a balanced but still quite innocuous, almost banal Chardonnay from a sunny, extremely chalky site in Jois, Leithagebirge. The winery’s website currently still offers the 2018, so the 2020 still has plenty of time to find its true form. 13% stated alcohol.
