Product description for Nittnaus Anita & Hans Comondor 2016 (bio)
Information about the Nittnaus family wine
We took over the business in 1985. We drank Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo, and similar wines, and planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Internationality was considered good form. Only in Ungerberg, our best vineyard, did we experiment and plant Blaufränkisch. The 1990 harvest produced two outstanding wines: one was Cabernet Sauvignon from Edelgrund, and the other, precisely the Blaufränkisch from Ungerberg, which quickly established that the two were a dream pair that deserved to be married. Thus was born the Comondor, which, in true Pannonian style, bears the name of a historic Hungarian shepherd dog breed and has since become something of a flagship of our business. We owe our position among Austrian red wine producers primarily to this wine, which has repeatedly achieved top rankings at tastings not only in Austria and consistently ranks among the best red wine cuvées. Like the Pannobile, the Comondor has evolved steadily, becoming more down-to-earth, more elegant, and more subtle. Since 1998, the elegant, full-bodied Merlot has replaced the more tart, rustic Cabernet Sauvignon as the main variety. Since 2004, it has consisted of Merlot, Blaufränkisch, and Zweigelt.
Colour
Dense violet-red, with a black core.
Nose
The 2016 Comondor presents itself very compact and spicy and, despite its advanced ripeness, still appears youthful and closed. Dark fruits such as sloe, elderberries, and blackberries combine with aromas of green bell pepper, grilled rosemary, juniper, licorice, bitter chocolate, coffee, and dark tobacco. Smoky minerality hovers over everything. Even on the nose, this wine conveys a wonderful depth.
Palate
On the palate, this is a wine that deserves the time it needs to unfold its full power and complexity. The fruity aromas on the nose combine with a distinctive tannin structure and intense minerality. Distinct saline notes immediately stimulate the appetite. The long finish indicates that the aging potential of this impressive long-distance runner is far from exhausted. If you want to enjoy it at this youthful stage, you should definitely decant it at least two hours beforehand and choose it for rich dishes with concentrated sauces.
