Product description for Luneau-Papin Excelsior AOP 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
This Muscadet, made from the Melon de Bourgogne variety, comes from the Clos des Noëlles in the La Plécisière vineyard in the village of La Chapelle-Heulin. Planted in 1936, these vines are among the oldest in the entire Nantais region. The soil consists of slate and mica schist. The Muscadet comes from plots belonging to the Cru Communal Goulaine, which has existed in Nantais since the late 1990s. Its name refers to the river that flows through the vineyards and flows into the Loire. From the vantage point on La Butte de la Roche, you can enjoy a view over the Goulaine marshland. The grapes were harvested by hand and pressed in a pneumatic press, with the force and duration of the pressing being adjusted according to the vintage. This was followed by spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, followed by fermentation and aging on the lees in underground, glass-lined cement cuvées for 24 to 36 months.
Colour
Intense straw yellow
Nose
If there were a Grand Cru in Muscadet, then the Muscadet Excelsior would be its expression. It has all the makings of a great wine. And since bottles of this wine from the outstanding 2002 vintage are still on the market, we know how well the Excelsior can age. But it is also enjoyable in its young version. The aroma of the Muscadet is reminiscent of ripe white-fleshed fruit such as apples, pears, quinces, and peaches. There are also notes of dried apple, a touch of nutmeg, yeast, and bread crust, as well as some mint, lichen, and wet stone.
Palate
On the palate, the young Excelsior presents itself deep and powerfully, with a blend of ripe fruit, almond butter, yeast, and apple and grapefruit peel. The almond notes are particularly typical of this Muscadet and can be found in both young and mature examples. The Muscadet is precise and linear, with a ripe yet lively acidity and underlying minerality and stoniness. All of this is underpinned by a hint of mille-feuille, yeast, yellow fruit, and the finest tannins. The Excelsior has all the qualities of a great white wine.
