Product description for Királyudvar Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszú Lapis 2003
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, this still young Sechs-Pütter is exceptionally creamy and balanced, yet rich and finely textured. Nuts, honey, apricot, and red apple combine with floral and muscat aromas, black tea, and ripe lemon, even a hint of bergamot and a fine acidity that, at this early stage of the wine’s life, is almost shy, yet always present. A Tokaji Aszú needs time. Accordingly, this is an investment in an extremely profound and complex Tokaji Aszú, whose true moment is yet to come, but whose greatness is already apparent, especially if you open it a few days before consumption and give it some air.
Királyudvar
When you think of Tokaji, you may first conjure images of the Habsburg court and stories of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Hardly any other wine is as closely associated with royal courts and their prestige as Tokaji. Accordingly, these noble sweet wines were always “the wine of kings and the king of wines,” as Louis XIV is said to have described it. One of the houses that supplied the Hungarian court with wines very early on is Királyudvar, which roughly translates as “the court of kings.” During Tokaji’s golden age from the 16th to the 18th century, Királyudvar’s Tokaji Aszú were among the most famous in the world.
Wine Information
78% Furmint, 22% Hárslevelű from the single vineyard Lapis on volcanic soil, gray and brown clay, and white ryolite tuff at an altitude of up to 230 meters. Spontaneous fermentation in 500-liter Hungarian oak fermenters. Aging for 28 months in 2,250-liter Hungarian oak barrels. A 6 Puttonyos (tubs) is made by adding six 22-kilo tubs of noble-rot grapes to 136.5 liters of base wine. After aging in oak barrels, a 6 Puttonyos matures for at least another six years before being released.

Nose
The dense and very complex nose of this 6 Puttony from the winery’s best location opens up into an aromatic range that oscillates between caramel, baked apple, fresh and dried apricots, honey, malt, and peach Melba, rounded off by the finest oriental spices such as allspice, clove, cinnamon, incense, earthy and peaty notes, and beeswax. The lapis scents botrytis in a truly perfect, noble, and pure form.
