Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 1ère Trie 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
Le Mont lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet vineyard and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It is characterized by a topsoil several meters deep, consisting of a pebbly, sometimes fist-sized flint, locally called perron, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. The 2022 harvest began on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (this year, the harvesters had never harvested for so long – there were 24 of them this year). Since heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening grapes, all varieties of Chenin Blanc could be produced, from the base wine for Pétillants to the first Trie. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation occurred only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« is a residually sweet wine, made from the first grapes affected by botrytis. Residual sweetness in this case means 100 g/l.
Color
: Intense golden yellow
Nose
The Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« 2022 appears fine and elegant, almost delicate. I have rarely experienced a Première Trie from this site so fragrant and floating. What is truly fascinating is that beneath this delicate side, with the addition of air, the darker, spicy, stony side also reveals itself, and the wine becomes deeper and more intense by the minute. It opens with notes of broom and jasmine, apple blossoms, ash, and rock. Then, fresh and mellow stone fruit with peel, as well as grapefruit and kumquats with zest, appear. Finally, one finds aspects of nuts, tobacco, herbs, and rock.
Palate
On the palate, the Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« appears full and intense with firm, sweet, and tart fruit. In some vintages, this wine like a separate dessert course. Not so in 2022. Everything is tightly interwoven, spicy, juicy, and smoky, but not heavy. While the wine lacks punchy acidity, it does have a sparkling minerality. It’s a Vouvray that already seems extremely harmonious, but will continue to evolve over the decades.
