Product description for Christmann Gimmeldinger Meerspinne Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The Meerspinne was extracted from the Gimmeldingen almond orchard. The name derives from an old vineyard that produces better wines than the rest of the almond orchard, which is why the Meerspinne is declared a Großes Gewächs (Great Growth) and the rest of the almond orchard is a Erste Lage (First Location). The Meerspinne vineyard has a limestone and red sandstone marl topsoil on a solid limestone subsoil. Yields here are typically only 40 hl/ha, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal flavour. The harvest took place on September 16, 2020. The whole bunches were mashed and then slowly pressed after a maceration period of three to six hours. After spontaneous fermentation – fermentation lasted until November 14, 2020 – the wine matured on the lees and fine lees in stainless steel and large, classic wooden barrels until bottling. Bottled in July 2021.

Nose
A. Christmann’s Gimmeldingen Meerspinne is, for me, always the most purist of Christmann’s GGs. It is smoky, iodine-based, salty, tart with apple peel, stony, and slightly nutty. The Riesling also has a charming side with notes of quince and yellow plums, rounded off with salted lemons and a touch of verbena.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is gripping and purist, citrusy and stony, yet also combined with a fine extract sweetness, a hint of juicy stone fruit, and a silky texture. The spicy, salty, iodine-based, and sinewy notes remain intact. A wonderful tension.

Score: 93
The 2023 Riesling Gimmeldinger Meerspinne Grosses Gewächs is grown on loess with some calcareous inclusions. The nose is shy, only giving a glimpse of its fruit underneath a veil of reduction. The palate has lovely elan and energy, sweeping in on a splash of ripe, rounded but wonderfully tangy citrus, delivering immense refreshment. This is zesty rather than pithy, with beautiful clarity, excellent fill and exquisite balance. (Bone-dry)
