Product description for Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru “Île des Vergelesses” rouge AOC 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Pinot Noir comes from the 9.41-hectare Premier Cru Île des Vergelesses vineyard in Pernand-Vergelesses. The vineyard is bordered by Savigny-les-Beaune Les Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses. The quality of the terroir is superior to that of any other Premier Cru vineyard in the area and is practically at Grand Cru level. The terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses, similar to that on the Corton hill, is characterized by siliceous and calcareous red marl with a high iron content. Domaine Chandon de Briailles has 13.31 hectares of east-facing vines, some of which are 40 years old on average, and some are even over 80 years old (from 1938). Spontaneous fermentation took place in a wooden cuvée with a high proportion of whole bunches. The wine was then gravity-fed into barriques and tonneaux with a low proportion of new wood. Maturation lasted around 18 months without further movement. The wine was usually bottled directly from the barrel with minimal sulphur content.
Colour
Garnet red
Nose
This Pinot Noir from the core Île des Vergelesses vineyard opens with a wonderful combination of ripe dark fruit, sour cherry, mint, graphite, undergrowth, and blood oranges. In contrast to the rather dark and warm Savignys, the Île is a cool, firm, iodine-rich, and yet deeper wine that requires more time in the decanter or cellar.
Palate
On the palate, the Île des Vergelesses in this wonderful vintage is balanced, powerful, and silky. The Pinot offers plenty of energy, deep minerality, clear acidity and phenolics, and above all, grippy yet fine tannins. Here, too, dark fruit notes of cherries and berries, as well as sour cherries and barberries, are evident. As in recent years, this is a superb, almost weightless, delicate, yet deep and complex red Île des Vergelesses that is already hard to resist, but one for which one should wait a few years. It is increasingly becoming a cooler, more refined competitor to the neighboring Cortons.
