Artazu is Artadi’s project in Navarre. In 1996, the winery, which is over a century old, was acquired and the almost lost heritage of old vines was preserved. Artazu’s soils consist of brown limestone and clayey limestone soils, generally nutrient-poor and rugged plots with harsh and contrasting weather: dry and hot in summer and cold and humid in winter. Santa Cruz de Artazu is made from 100% ancient Grenache vines, located in Artazu between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils and are cultivated according to organic viticulture guidelines without the use of any pesticides or herbicides. The grapes are harvested by hand, with a yield of 2.5 t/ha. The winemaking takes place in open stainless steel tanks with a cold maceration for 24-48 hours. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques before the wine aged for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels.

Colour

Crimson red with violet reflections and a black core.

Nose

The nose of the 2019 Santa Cruz de Artazu from Artazu is red and fresh, reminiscent of cherries, pomegranate, red currants, and rosy-cheeked apples. Fresh culinary herbs such as ground elder and borage, as well as mild spices such as mace, juniper, and cloves, give it additional complexity. A fruity, fresh character with a juicy, boozy nature.

Palate

It flows smoothly and joyfully across the palate, combining its jovial fruit with fine-grained tannins that neatly divide and contour it. With a cool attack and fresh acidity, it stretches far across the palate and presents itself structurally on the side of fresh and refreshing red wines. The red fruit is underscored by a hint of licorice, and the tannin accompanies it into a cool finish.
