Info

The Phaunus Loureiro comes from various locations in northwest Portugal and spans appellations. However, all Loureiro vines are south-facing. Harvesting between September 10 and 15, 2021, is followed by crushing the grapes, destemming, and pressing in an antique basket press. The must then ferments spontaneously in clay aphorae, and all amphorae are sealed with beeswax to regulate oxidation. Racking follows after six months on the lees.

Colour

Slightly cloudy chamomile yellow with golden reflections.

Nose

The nose is alive with floral and citrus aromas. Candied orange peel, mandarin zest, and grapefruit dominate at the beginning. Red fruit tea emerges subtly. Chamomile tea, as well as yellow and white blossoms, work in abundance. A little grated cinnamon stick, along with white pepper and marjoram, provides plenty of spice. Thoughts of tannin-heavy tea keep coming back. Over time, clear associations with Early Grey and plenty of bergamot develop.

Palate

On the palate, it presents itself as expected: light-footed and fresh with aromatic density. It displays fruit and coolness at the same time. It appears compact and thrives on a fine tannin that holds it together. The nuances of orange and tangerine are also omnipresent in the finish. Yet always subtle and never intrusive. Its spice is once again clearly reminiscent of Early Grey and bergamot. Phaunus is the kind of orange wine that makes this easy for everyone to understand. High fruit yield with great lightness.
