Information about the Wine

The Domaine Romanesca property in the Château Gaillard vineyard in Morgon covers 0.8 hectares. The vineyard is located in the northeast of the appellation on pink granite with a shallow depth. The vines of the Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, to give it its full name, are around 40 years old and yield 30 hl/ha. This vineyard is still in the process of converting to certified organic farming, and this wine is being made for the first time. After hand-picking and sorting, whole bunches were used. Undamaged grapes were placed at the bottom of the concrete cuvée, and crushed ones were placed on top, allowing the Gamay to undergo a semi-carbonic maceration for around 15 days. The wine was then aged in the concrete cuvée for around eleven months.

Quite dense garnet red

Nose

This first-time bottling of Château Gaillard is a comparatively dark and dense Beaujolais, with aromatic opening notes of licorice, dry wood, and warm forest floor, cinnamon, and vanilla, as well as ripe, sweet cherries and dark berries.

Palate

On the palate, this is a flatterer, a charmer with silky tannins and an equally silky, yet lively acidity, with plenty of dark, sweet fruit and a pleasant, cool mineral vein. This is a powerful, almost mighty Morgon, yet superbly balanced. It appears fleshy and muscular, yet also elegant. The finish reveals salty, peppery, and smoky notes that complement the juicy fruit.

A new cuvée for the domaine, the 2020 Morgon Château Gaillard is a powerful, rich and concentrated wine redolent of dark berries, cracked pepper, spices and licorice. Lively and muscular, its 15% alcohol is comparatively well concealed, though it’s certainly not shy.
