Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz R’ Chardonnay trocken 2022 (bio)
Information on the terroir
All grapes are grown in the VDP. Große Lage IM SONNENSCHEIN vineyard. While most of the Palatinate vineyards along the Haardt edge, the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, were formed as east-facing slopes by the Rhine Graben, which runs from south to north, there are also south-facing slopes in the Queichtal valley, which leads from the Palatinate Forest into the Rhine Valley. The Siebeldingen “summer side” has the site designation “Im Sonnenschein” (In Sunshine). Our parcels in this location are located 180 to 225 m above sea level, have a slope gradient of 5 to 20%, and are southwest-facing slopes east of the “German Wine Route.”
Due to the subsidence and faults of the Rhine Graben and the strong uplift of the Palatinate Forest, very old and otherwise very deep-lying geological formations are exposed in the area around Siebeldingen. The Pinot Noir vines grow on shell limestone soil, which formed during the Triassic period 240 million years ago. The soil consists of “limestone that contains mussel shells or is composed of mussel shells.” This is why fossils of marine life are still frequently found in the soil.
Information on the Vinification
The healthy and ripe grapes were the perfect starting point for this red wine. After selective hand-harvesting, the grapes were destemmed and kept cool in the red wine fermentation tanks for almost a week, with repeated overflow. This “cold maceration” is intended to develop as many of the typical Pinot Noir and site-specific aromas as possible before fermentation. During the subsequent mash fermentation of approximately one week, the mash cake was also punctured and submerged. Pressing took place after three weeks of mash contact. The wine was racked from the coarse lees before barrel aging. New and used barriques made of French and Palatinate oak were used for the two-year aging in wood. For quality reasons, the wine was neither fined nor filtered. Therefore, a fine deposit may occur.
Color
Muted garnet red with delicate violet highlights towards the rim.
Nose
The 2022 Spätburgunder “R” from Muschelkalk captivates the nose with juicy and sweet fruit reminiscent of black cherries, cassis, wild berries, and wild berry jam. The fruity aroma is accompanied by cool, mineral notes that lend it playfulness and finesse. Upon contact with oxygen, earthy notes and hints of wild herbs emerge. A perfectly harmonious overall picture of an elegant Pinot that presents itself youthfully and playfully.
Palate
On the palate, it is minerally fresh, Burgundian, and extremely elegant; the fine wood spice suits it well and will integrate wonderfully with further maturation and experience. It has a very pleasant flow, thanks to its cool, mineral character. The subtle saltiness in the finish stimulates the appetite. Its development potential should not be underestimated; there’s still room for improvement! So buy it, put it away, and feel free to opt for more mature vintages for immediate enjoyment.

Wine Advocate
Score: 92
The 2022 Chardonnay R is from vines averaging 21 years of age from diverse vineyards in Siebeldingen (55%), Godramstein and Arzheim. Vinified in pièces (one-third of which were new) for 11 months, then blended and aged for another six months in old pièces, this is a quite aromatic and fruity Chardonnay with an elegant texture, finesse, mineral vitality and remarkable balance. There is bay leaf on the finish that is intense, dense and savory saline with fine phenolic grip and good tension. This had no maceration and gentle pressing. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.

The 2022 Chardonnay R was picked in the limestone soils of Siebeldingen, Godramstein and Arzheim. Half was whole-bunch-pressed, and half had skin contact. It spent a year on gross lees and was then racked, blended and aged for another six months on fine lees in used barrels. Smooth polenta and cool heavy cream define the nose. The palate is smoky, with an immense undertow of fruit that unites creamy banana and juicy apricot compote. Brightness supports this entire smooth, harmonious picture, always with the brightness of lemon. Medium-bodied but with lots of contour, the finish is really long. (Bone-dry)
