Product description for Martin Muthenthaler Riesling Vießlinger Stern 2019
Information about the wine
The Vießlinger Stern is actually Martin Muthenthaler’s flagship vineyard for both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. However, the star does not appear on the vineyard maps. The Vießlinger Stern is now considered a sub-vineyard of the Bruck vineyard. The site, with its more than 60 parcels, is still small and difficult to access. Muthenthaler’s oldest vines, 35+ years old, grow there. The parcel is characterized by orthogneiss and mica schist. After spontaneous fermentation in large acacia wood barrels, the Riesling was aged on the full lees with constant batonnage.
Colour
Light golden yellow
Nose
The first thing that strikes you about the Riesling Vießlinger Stern is the wonderfully pure, intense, almost hedonistic fruit that characterizes the wine from the very first moment. Apricots, vineyard peaches, and yellow pears combine with yellow plums and kumquats. The second thing that stands out is the subtle smokiness and fine stone spice that gradually blends into the fruit and also combines with an elegant yeast note.
Palate
On the palate, this is a Riesling that is as intense as it is elegant, highly aromatic and lively, yet firm and increasingly bitter, dense, and stony towards the finish, its minerality gradually exciting and almost electrifying the palate and tongue. The star oscillates between a great charm offensive at the beginning and pure seriousness at the end; it needs a glass of Burgundy, plenty of time and air and then reveals itself in all its multi-layered splendour.

Score: 95+
From about 35-year-old vines on shallow mica schist, the 2019 Viesslinger Stern Riesling is beautifully floral and pure on the intense, concentrated and flinty/stony nose, which is phenolic at the beginning and shows ripe and dried apricot aromas spiced with schist chips and then shows cantuccini notes after a while in the glass. Crystalline, vital and finessed on the first palate, this is an intense, elegant and firm dry Riesling. It is initially almost austere on the concentrated and very intense finish, which is still a bit tannic and needs some years ointhe bottle to get the balance right and the hedonist lucky. Oh, wait, use a carafe or a big glass and learn what air can give to the wine: even more intensity, charm and rich, aromatic, even juicy fruit and an amazingly tensioned finish. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.
