Product description for Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1ère Trie 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
The Haut-Lieu is the vineyard that is the origin of the Huet winery. The Huet family first visited the village of Vouvray in 1928 and was so impressed by the property that now forms the winery, including the five-hectare Le Haut-Lieu vineyard, that they acquired both and founded the Huet winery. Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is characterized by deep brown clay with a small amount of flint and chalk in the topsoil. The topsoil is called aubuis locally. The bedrock consists of yellow tuffeau limestone and lies four meters deep. The 2022 harvest began on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (this year, the harvesters had never harvested for so long). Since heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening of the grapes, all varieties of Chenin Blanc could be produced, from the base wine for Pétillants to the first Trie. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and fermented spontaneously during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation occurred only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” is a residually sweet wine, in which the first grapes affected by botrytis were used. Residual sweetness in this case means 95 g/l.
Colour
intense golden yellow
Nose
The fact that the Clos du Bourg Moelleux “Première Trie” is one of the Loire’s deepest white wines can only be guessed at from the aroma of the 2022 vintage. The wine opens very discreetly and appears more floral than concentrated. The full fruit is concealed, and at most one catches a hint of honey, rock, and pickled kumquats. The Chenin actually seems rather cool and stony.
Palate
The wine presents itself quite differently on the palate. It appears gentle, approachable, and full of fruit. Ripe, sweet, and partly dried peaches, quince, yellow plums, oranges, apples, and pears appear here. Although this fruit seems concentrated, it does not give the impression of a compote. Rather, this still young “Première Trie” manages to appear prancing. This makes it incredibly seductive. This doesn’t seem like 95 grams of residual sugar at all, but rather like a concentration balanced by a dark and deep minerality and fine acidity.
