Information about the Wine

La Cuvee is the classic sparkling wine blend of the Penedès region, made from the local white wine varieties Xarel.lo, Macabeo, and Parellada. The grapes are biodynamically cultivated, and the sparkling wine is Demeter-certified. Fifteen percent of the base wine was aged for one year in 300-liter barrels, while the other part remained in steel tanks. The wine is aged on the lees after bottle fermentation for around 36 months. The wine has a low dosage of 5g/l, which corresponds to an Extra Brut, but is classified as a Brut. The Gramona winery belongs to the renowned Corpinnat association, which split off from the Cava DO in 2019 and establishes strict rules for sparkling wine production.

Nose

La Cuvee 2019 has a very fresh and cheerful nose, blending notes of stone fruit and white flowers. Aromas of almonds and biscuit, which come from the lees, are also present, but do not stand out excessively, staying elegantly in the background.

Palate

Let’s start with the end: The slightly bitter finish of this sparkling wine is extremely stimulating and typical of a cuvée with Xarel.lo as the main variety. At the same time, the low dosage ensures that the finish is rather soft and not too steely. La Cuvee is bright and fresh at the start, the fine bubbles provide a creamy mouthfeel. Crisp apple and citrus notes also emerge. Despite the relatively long 36-month lees aging, yeast aromas such as almond and bread dough remain in the background. The balance between fruit and yeast flavours is therefore top-notch. Otherwise, the wine doesn’t have anything heavy or opulent about it; instead, it’s elegant and has a mineral touch. That’s great, especially for a mid-priced sparkling wine.
