Product description for Familia Nin Ortiz “La Rodeda” Velles Vinyes 2018
Information about the wine
This is the second vintage of a wine that comes from a vineyard of just 0.6 hectares, the fruit of which was still processed at Mas d’en Caçador until 2016. La Rodeda is listed as a separate vineyard in the appellation maps, something Carles Ortiz and Ester Nin were previously unaware of. They always counted it as part of Mas d’en Caçador. What’s special is that this vineyard is almost 100% planted with approximately 80-year-old Garnacha Peluda, or Lladoner Pelut in French, a unique red Grenache variety. In addition, this vineyard faces north and, at around 650 meters, is one of the highest in the entire Priorat. In addition to black Llicorella slate, red quartzite is also found here. The grapes were fermented whole and aged 100% in new French barriques. At exactly 13.87%, this is the red wine with the lowest alcohol content in the entire range. The grapes were harvested on September 13, 2018. After destemming, the grapes were foot-stomped in open fermentation tanks and then fermented naturally. La Rodeda was aged for 19 months in a barrel, from which 310 bottles were filled.

Nose
Alongside La Coma d’en Romeu and Mas d’en Caçador, La Rodeda establishes itself as the house’s third great wine. And in its second vintage, the wine is even more refined, and the aroma is delightfully fresh and clear. The Vi de Partage Velles Vinyes, which previously flowed into Mas d’en Caçador, presents itself as a unique wine with a fantastic balance of power and sensuality. The wine opens with notes of sea lavender, violets, and broom before fear sets in. Cherries, blackberries, and raspberries can be found here. Everything appears ripe but also crisp, and refined with licorice, a hint of cinnamon and vanilla, but also tobacco, earth, and undergrowth. The Garnacha Peluda appears impressively fine and deep.
Palate
On the palate, the unbridled freshness and clarity, combined with depth, ripeness, and substance, delight. La Rodeda is permeated with vitality and a very unique vibration and rhythm. The dark, juicy, and firm fruit is accompanied by a very fine saltiness, and here, again, by a fine spiciness and a quite distinctive tannin, typical of Garnacha Peluda. The La Rodeda Vi de Partage is a vibrant, elegant, fine and sensual wine with the perfect balance of energy and relaxation.
