Product description for Battenfeld-Spanier Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

The Schwarzer Herrgott lies at the beginning of the Zellertal Basin, which opens up a few kilometers further east and ends with the Frauenberg. Here, as there, the pure limestone substratum predominates. The key difference is the microclimatic conditions. While the Frauenberg is characterized by its open, exposed location and windy conditions, the Schwarzer Herrgott is located on a steep, narrow fault line, which further protects the site from rain and the full force of the sun. The site was first mentioned in the records of Saint Philip of Zell. This Irish monk Christianized the region around 700 AD and founded a monastery near Zell (cellular). Saint Philip planted his sacramental vineyard in this location, a quarter of an hour’s walk from his monastery. So that the monks wouldn’t have to walk back every time to pray, they also erected a cross there, which weathered black over time and gave the site its name. Thanks to written records, the Schwarzer Herrgott is now one of the oldest documented wine-growing regions. The border between Rheinhessen and the northern Palatinate runs right through the Schwarzer Herrgott.

Colour

Brilliant golden yellow.

Nose

What a revelation in its aroma. After decanting for a few hours, the 2022 Mölsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG dry reveals itself with expressive minerality, a compact and cool finish, and aromas of citrus, grapefruit, green apple, verbena, mint, mussel shells, and a hint of soy sauce and roasted crustacean shell. As youthful and reserved as it appears, its entrée is equally promising.

Palate

Upon reaching the palate, it grips the palate, trailing across the tongue with a hint reminiscent of lemon swirled in salt. Its coolness and elegance, as well as vibrant freshness, define its character. Clear as a mountain spring, each sip leaves you wanting another; the fruity citrus aromas and fresh herbs are omnipresent, culminating in a long finish with plenty of umami. Great aging potential! If possible, aerate for several hours and enjoy from large glasses!

Vinous

Score: (93-95)

The 2022 Riesling Mölsheimer Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Grosses Gewächs immediately impresses with ripe Amalfi lemon aromatics, still tinged with a tiny bit of flinty reduction. Large limestone rocks define the stony soil. Underneath that, creaminess and subtle stone fruit appear. The palate comes across as cool, profound and subtle. That lemon intensity is accentuated by a slightly yeasty texture that leans into the lemon pith. The lemon note is the strongest amidst lasting coolness and beautiful definition. Very long and pure.
