Wine Information

Pies Negros (Black Feet) is the local wine in the Artuke portfolio, made from around 90 percent Tempranillo and Graciano. The grapes come from various vineyards in the municipality of Ábalos. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 550 to 620 meters in the Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, where the Atlantic influence in the Rioja is particularly noticeable. The brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco vinify this wine primarily in used 225- and 500-liter barrels, while a smaller batch matures in concrete tanks. The result is Pies Negros 2021 that represents excellent value for money.

Nose

Pies Negros 2021 has a slender, fresh nose, highlighting white pepper and red fruit. Despite its lively character, the attractive bouquet also has a meaty note that grounds the wine. Overall, this nose reveals the cool and refined side of Rioja.

Palate

On the palate, Pies Negros 2021 is strikingly juicy and slender. The tannins are fine-grained, the texture silky, and the finish is medium-length. The wine flows beautifully tautly through the mouth; it is tense and elegant. Although small oak barrels were used in the winemaking process, the wood is not noticeable at all. This wine is a prime example of the motto “freshness and drinkability, instead of power and extract,” which has become the leitmotif of a new generation of Spanish winemakers.

I tasted two vintages of most wines, including the village wine from Ábalos, the oldest of which was the 2021 Pies Negros. It fermented with uncrushed grapes and indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for one year, but 10% of the wine was kept in concrete. It has 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.51. It’s clean, aromatic and primary, juicy and balanced, with fine and elegant tannins. 65,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in December 2022.
