The Grand Cru vineyard Furstentum in Kientzheim was first mentioned in 1330. The Riesling vines here grow on south-facing limestone slopes and were planted in 1990. Fermentation and aging take place in steel tanks. The wine is allowed to mature on the full lees and is bottled unfiltered. The 2021 vintage is often compared to 1996 in Alsace. A dry year, marked by a very wet June. In August, the grapes began to develop a wonderful golden colour. A vintage full of fruit, but extremely low sugar yield and fine acid structures. Expressed in bare facts: 13.0% vol., 2.2g/l residual sugar with an acidity of 7.2g/l.

Colour

Bright golden yellow with light reflections

Nose

The nose is totally puristic and crystal-clear. Its fruit is pure and unmistakable: white peach, as well as vineyard peach, nashi pear, and grapefruit. Its purism is also reflected in this clear, chalky purity. This is also characterized by a memory of wet chalk and whiffs of cold smoke. A multitude of ethereal aromas then slowly unfold. Lemon balm, coriander, mint, sage, and thyme represent a whole phalanx of herbal freshness. A slightly vegetal note is reminiscent of green peas and fennel.

Palate

The Furstentum Riesling also conveys these impressions directly to the palate. Like a mountain stream, it flows swiftly and coolly towards its destination. It appears racy, robust, and characterized by a fruity mid-palate. Its progression is linear and thrives on the finest phenolics. This builds pressure on the palate, but its racy character continues to pull it forward. It strikes me as stimulating, challenging, and long-lasting. Its ethereal and vegetal character characterizes the finish for minutes.
