Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Grand Cru Sommerberg extends over very steep slopes above the village of Niedermorschwihr. This biotite-granite terroir is south-facing. The Zind-Humbrecht winery was able to acquire a very beautiful small plot in the Dudenstein vineyard within this Grand Cru. This small, 0.32-hectare vineyard was replanted in 2013 with our mass selection of Riesling (from old Brand vines) at a high density (9,500 vines/hectare). We also rebuilt a large stone wall in the center of the slope to facilitate winch work and, above all, to limit erosion. It is impossible to cultivate this steep vineyard any other way. The biotite granite decomposes with the microbiological activity of the soil, creating a very interesting, clayey terroir.
Information on the aging process
In contrast to the Brand, where the rock protrudes more from the ground, the soil of the Sommerberg appears to have more depth. The 2020 was the winery’s first Riesling to complete its fermentation dry.
Colour
Intense, dense golden yellow.
Nose
The aroma of the 2020 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg is open with distinct exotic notes: vineyard peach meets orange, mango cream, acacia, honey, candied ginger, limes tossed in salt, and elderflower. Its minerality tightly encompasses it, yet it also displays a light-footed elegance.
Palate
An exotic potpourri erupts on the palate, abundant juicy fruit, fruity sweetness, and a crisp and delicate acidity that makes this wine seem incredibly vibrant. A brilliant firework of aromas, fruit, and impressions – I’m excited to see how it develops over the next few years; the potential seems magnificent! If you want to enjoy it now, you should definitely decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to gain more expression.

Wine Advocate
Score: 91
The 2020 Riesling Sommerberg is the second vintage of this steep cru, and Humbrecht replanted the 32.5-are vineyard on decomposed granite in 2012 and 2013 in high density (9,500 plants per hectare, all from their own massal selections from the Brand, which was planted in the 1920s). The nose of this intensely yellow-golden grand cru is impressively pure and aromatic, reminiscent of mangoes and wet, weathered stones. On the palate, this is an elegant, intense and fruity yet still not dramatic or tensioned Riesling with fine tannins and fine orange/lemon bitters. 12.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.
