Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2013 (bio)
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was founded under this name in 1959 on the occasion of the wedding of Léonard Humbrecht to Geneviève Zind, and from the merger of the two vineyards, Humbrecht in Gueberschwihr and Zind in Wintzenheim. The Humbrecht family was already producing wine during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, which comprised less than five hectares in the early 1960s, grew to 40 hectares by the mid-1990s. This includes parcels in Grand Cru vineyards such as Rangen (Thann) and Brand (Turckheim). Olivier took over the estate in 1989. The first Master of Wine in the family, he converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 1999 and is also chairman of Biodyvin. Today, all wines are produced in large barrels with long lees ageing. Botrytis does not occur in dry wines.

From vines that average 51 years old and were extremely low yielding (nine hectoliters per hectare) that year, the yellow-golden 2013 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann opens with a pure yet also concentrated, finely nutty and spicy nose of ripe fruits and crushed flint stones. Still enormously fresh and vibrantly mineral on the palate, this is a very dense and elegant, saline, moderately powerful and age-worthy Riesling that is still too young (or austere) to be fully enjoyed. Bottled in March 2015 with 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023.
“In 2013, the climatic conditions made it difficult for the younger vines, so we only kept the oldest plantations for the Rangen,” explained Olivier Humbrecht. The yields were thus even smaller than 2012, but this is a concentrated Rangen that deserves some time in the glass in order to fully open up and show more of its potential.

Pale, gold-tinged yellow. Very deep but reticent aromas of fresh citrus fruits, chlorophyll and stone. Then bright and fresh in the mouth, conveying sneaky concentration and power to the dense citrus, mineral, mint and green apple flavors. Lively acidity gives this big wine a lovely light touch, making it seem more graceful and less powerful than usual for Rangen. These grapes were harvested between October 15 and October 20, which is not especially late for this vineyard (in really cold years, Humbrecht harvests his Rangen vines at the end of October or even early November).
