Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer 2018 (bio)
Wine Info
Clos Häuserer is a small, square vineyard of 1,198 hectares, situated on deep, calcareous marl soil directly below the Grand Cru Hengst, on a gentle eastern slope surrounded by hills. The Oligocene parent rock is about one to one and a half meters deep. This rich layer of soil takes a long time to warm up, which is why Clos Häuserer, despite being located in a very early-ripening area, can exhibit the characteristics of a late-ripening vineyard. The high free lime content is probably responsible for the reductive profile of this wine in its youth. The first vintage, 1975 (the vines were only three years old, so the wine was not declared a Clos Häuserer), is still very much alive. (Olivier Humbrecht).
Vineyard Info
High acidity, slow opening, very slow fermentation! The 2018 vintage produced beautifully ripe grapes, and as usual, it was the last wine to complete fermentation in 2018. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The nose of the 2018 Riesling Clos Häuserer is still closed due to its youth. After decanting, notes of limestone, dried linden blossom, chamomile, hay, and white pepper emerge clearly. Dried apricot, fresh pineapple, pineapple stalk, vineyard peach, apple sauce, and even lychee become increasingly prominent after opening for a longer period. Anise, cardamom, and ginger give it an intensely exotic impression.
Palate
On the palate, it surprises across the board with its elegance and freshness. Delicate salty notes meet lively acidity, and the fruit appears brighter than on the nose, evoking pear, honeydew melon, and citrus. A Riesling whose slender body makes it a pleasure to drink and pairs perfectly with dishes with a fresh flavour. Those who want to enjoy it now should definitely decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to develop its full potential.

Wine Advocate
Score: 93
From vines planted in 1973 on a very gentle slope with calcareous marls from the Oligocene period, the 2018 Riesling Clos Häuserer has coolish, refined and elegant as well as dense Riesling aromas intertwined with delicate earthy notes. Very elegant and quiet on the palate, this is a quite rich yet vivacious Riesling with fine tannin grip and structural acidity. The wine has an intense and texture finish with salts and tension and drinks perfectly well today but can also be aged for about two decades. Bottled in January 2020. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
