Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer 2016
Wine Information
Clos Häuserer is a small, square vineyard of 1,198 hectares, situated on deep, calcareous marl soil directly below the Grand Cru Hengst on a gentle eastern slope surrounded by hills. The Olizocene parent rock is about one to one and a half meters deep. This rich layer of soil takes a long time to warm up, which is why Clos Häuserer, despite being located in a very early-ripening area, can exhibit the characteristics of a late-ripening vineyard. The high free-lime content is probably responsible for the reductive profile of this wine in its youth. The first vintage, 1975 (the vines were only three years old, so the wine was not released as Clos Häuserer), is still very vibrant.
Vine Information
The 2016 vintage has a very precise structure on the palate and incredible aging potential. Spontaneously fermented, a delicate residual sweetness remained, but it still appears almost dry.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
A juicy aroma of ripe peach, applesauce, pears, and ripe pineapple charmingly presents itself on the nose. A delicate scent of smoke, cardamom, and anise hovers above it, while hints of broom and acacia blossom intensify its interesting aroma. Interesting precisely because, for all its charm, the wine possesses an attractive, brittle note due to the intense limestone on which it was grown.
Palate
This interesting, brittle note is also found on the palate in combination with fresh fruit and distinct residual sweetness, which in turn is wonderfully balanced by fresh acidity and a fine tannin note. The long finish, which indicates its fantastic aging potential, offers a delicately tart grapefruit note.
Recommendation
If you want to enjoy it now, be sure to decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to develop its full potential.

Score: 92+
From 43-year-old vines on deep, calcareous marl soils just below the Hengst Grand Cru, the 2016 Wintzenheim Riesling Clos Häuserer offers a deep, elegant, still discreetly aromatic but spicy-mineral nose with a rather shy, coolish, pretty distinctive character. It is a full-bodied, concentrated and powerful yet elegant Riesling with fine tannins and delicate, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and compact but still a bit astringent. The Clos Häuserer will develop slowly with bottle aging, so stay patient! Tasted at the domaine in June 2018.

Bright pale straw. Lime, minerals, ripe pear, quinine and orange jam on the inviting nose. Then pure and penetrating, offering fresh, precise flavors similar to the aromas. Long and ripe on the aftertaste, with very good depth. An amazing wine and one of the better Clos Hauserer renditions in a long time.
