Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2023 (bio)
The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann marks the southernmost point of the Alsace Wine Route – and is also one of the coolest and late-ripening sites in the region. The Clos Saint Urbain is situated on slopes up to 130% steep, exposed to the south, characterized by dark, volcanic rock made of tuff and greywacke. The altitude is remarkable: the base of the Rangen is higher than the summit of the Brand. Cooling valley winds and slow ripening ensure exceptional tension – and a harvest that is traditionally one of the latest in the entire vineyard.
2023 was a year of balance: the mineral depth and smoky tension of the Rangen are particularly present here – a wine with unique energy. The vines are on average 60 years old, and the yield was just 25 hl/ha. Fermentation was complete, and the wine is dry with 1.1 g/l residual sugar and 13.5% alcohol. The acidity is 6.3g/l (tartrate), and the pH is 3.3. The wine matured on the full lees until bottling in January 2025. Ready to drink from 2028, with great aging potential well beyond 2052.
Color
Old gold, bright and clear.
Nose
Thanksgiving is the first thought that comes to mind when I smell the 2023 Rangen de Thann Pinot Gris Clos Saint-Urbain Grand Cru from Zind-Humbrecht: The aromas of fully ripe stone fruits like yellow and red apples mingle with pears, grains, straw, and nuts. Chestnuts and acacia blossoms mingle with forest honey—it smells like an entire barn full of autumnal bounty. Generous and expansive – clearly calling for a carafe and large glasses.
Palate
The first sip clearly promises something great: Viscous on the palate, it immediately tapers off and appears taut on the palate – despite its rich extract. The almost waxy fruit is a sketch of its future, as the wine requires aging – the earliest drinking window according to the winery: from 2028! The fine phenolics frame it with a nutty-tart aroma, and the light grip invites frequent pours. The wine is completely dry-fermented and pulsates with a warm bass on the palate until it eases into a cathedral, exaggeratedly long finish.
