Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2022 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a lengthy finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: Pinot Gris is still a misunderstood grape variety in Alsace. By nature, it’s a grape variety that’s easily mutated, and this is reflected in the different styles it can produce, from very light to extremely concentrated, dry to sweet, white, pink, orange, sparkling… In recent vintages, the earlier growth of the vines due to climate change has made it increasingly difficult to obtain high-quality botrytis and the acidity necessary to balance high sweetness. Acidity levels decrease the later the harvest, so we need vintages with higher acidity to produce such wines. Here, Pinot Gris is grown high on the steep western slopes of Heimbourg. Choosing the right harvest time is quite difficult, as Pinot Gris’s sugar content rises quickly, so less sunlight facilitates the perfect balance for a dry wine. Pinot Gris thrives on the red limestone conglomerate, where the soil imparts structure and definition to its style. The 2022 vintage fermented very slowly but was vinified dry.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow with silvery reflections.
Nose
The 2022 Pinot Gris Heimbourg displays a complex aroma of lemon, grapefruit, and orange, intermingled with fresh herbal notes reminiscent of lemon balm, wild mint, and elderberry wood. All framed by a delicately smoky, spicy, and stony minerality, which gives it the perfect framework even on the nose. An aristocratic, fine Pinot Gris announces itself.
Palate
On the palate, it captivates with its freshness and vibrancy; the fine acidity is enveloped by a salty note and drifts across the tongue with a highly stimulating and inspiring note. The subtle bitter note in the long finish tempts you to pair it with aromatic cuisine with fruity, fresh influences. A wine with an inspiring arc of tension! If you want to enjoy it now, it’s best to decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to develop its full potential.

From a west-facing site, the 2022 Heimbourg Turckheim Pinot Gris is coolish, fresh, bright and wonderfully fresh on the nose that is reminiscent of sage, green tea and herbs but also shows just-ripe, healthy Pinot fruit. Round, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a tight and tensioned, slightly reductive yet still pretty closed Pinot Gris that indicates power and substance yet still doesn’t sing to me. 12.64% alcohol including 2.9 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
