Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2016
Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
Wine Information
The Heimbourg vineyard is one of the small individual sites in the secondary and tertiary fault area in Turckheim. In this area, the geology varies greatly over short distances, explaining why these vineyards are so small (Clos Jebsal, Boland, and Heimbourg). Heimbourg is the only one that lies from southwest to west on limestone soil with a low Oligocene content. The upper part of the vineyard, which is most exposed to the winds, is planted with Pinot grapes. It is essentially similar to the Rotenberg on the other side of the valley, but with a much lower iron content, and therefore often produces more aromatic and expressive wines that are already very beautiful in their youth.
Vineyard Information
Like most of the 2016 Pinot Gris, the grapes ripened perfectly at a lower alcohol content to produce an elegant, dry wine.
Colour
Brilliant, light golden yellow with delicate mother-of-pearl reflections.
Nose
The 2016 Pinot Gris Heimbourg has a sharp aroma of citrus, orange, lime, and apricot jam, peach stone, and ripe mango. The prominent fruit is supported by numerous spicy notes of cardamom, coriander, Laos ginger, and gingerbread spice. The flint notes are prominent, along with a true umami aroma reminiscent of meat broth and bacon. A truly delicate wine.
Palate
Juicy and punchy on the palate, it also reveals itself with spice and fine tannins. The spicy, bacony structure combined with the creamy sweetness and salty undertone creates a striking and voluptuous impression, yet still very youthful, almost unfinished. It should be given the necessary time to mature; it will develop into a wonderfully multifaceted wine that is an excellent accompaniment to aromatically intense and rich dishes. Be sure to decant it now and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses.

Score: 90+
From an average of 30-year-old vines on calcareous marl soils, the 2016 Turckheim Pinot Gris Heimbourg opens a bit reductive but fresh and with clear fruit on the nose that will develop with aeration. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and powerful dry Pinot Gris with a dense texture, good tannins and pretty rich character. Fermented up to 12.5% alcohol plus 7.7 grams of residual sugar, this is a generous and mouth-filling yet elegant and stimulating Pinot with good structure and good aging potential. This was sourced from poor Oligocen limestone soils in the top part of the vineyard that is exposed to winds and delivers healthy grapes that give an aromatic and expressive wine.

Vivid straw-gold. Very pure aromas of peach, honey and baked cinnamon apple; lemon verbena and jasmine notes provide noteworthy fragrance and lift. Then very rich and dense, offering a viscous mouthfeel and repeating, lingering ripe orchard fruit and sweet spice flavors given clarity and cut by zingy lemony acidity. Extremely long and expansive on the luscious aftertaste. A truly beautiful wine, but many wine lovers who like their whites bone dry will find it just too sweet. (It actually has only 7.7 g/L r.s. but its lower acidity leaves a rounder, softer impression behind.)
