Information about the Wine

The wines from the Ried Zieregg site are the ones that have made the Tement winery world-famous. The Ried Zieregg is the Tements’ home site, situated at an altitude of 330 to 490 meters and characterized by various limestone variants such as coral shell limestone, weathered limestone, and limestone marl, each with quite thin layers of clay. The microclimate of this site, combined with the soils and the more than 40-year-old vines, ensures wines with a strong and elegant aromatic expression and unique aging potential, to which the organic and very complex farming method contributes its share. However, since the Ried Zieregg is a large site with diverse microclimates, soil structures, and sun exposures, the Tements also bottle some parcels individually. What previously happened here and there became apparent with the 2020 vintage, which has to do with the changed site legislation in Southern Styria. This has led the Tements to divide the mountain into four sites: the Zieregg vineyard, the Zieregg Kapelle vineyard, the Zieregg Kår vineyard, and the Zieregg Steilriegel vineyard. The Zieregg “Kapelle” is a Sauvignon Blanc from the plateau above the winery, located at the foot of the Carmelite Chapel. It covers 1.48 hectares and has approximately 7,000 vines, each aged 18 years old, making it the youngest part of the vineyard. It lies at 470 m above sea level, receives all-day sun, but is enveloped by a cooling forest mantle. The soil is characterized by heavy clay and loam on coral limestone. The spontaneously fermented wine is vinified in neutral, used 700-liter containers.

Nose

The Zieregg »Kapelle« is a very unique Zieregg type, with plenty of crushed stone and smoke on the nose, combining with notes of green pears, greengage, limequats, mint, and lichen. With air, the citrus side, but also the Sauvignon Blanc identity of gooseberries and cassis, becomes increasingly clear. At the moment, it seems like a congenial combination of Southern Styria and Pouilly-Fumé, pure flint, so to speak!

Palate

On the palate, the Zieregg »Kapelle« is absolutely pure and clear, like liquefied stone, with iodine, lime and lemon juice, green apples and pears, gooseberries, and a hint of elderflower. Above all, however, it is the stone that is bursting through with a powerful acidity. The wine is reminiscent of crystals, combined with salted lemon, white pepper, and green fruit notes. The finish is long, salty, and razor-sharp. Zieregg for purists!
