Product description for Sottimano Fausoni, Barbaresco DOCG 2021

Christoph Raffelt 14.2.2023: The Nebbiolo comes from the Fausoni vineyard in Neive. Fausoni is located directly adjacent to the town of Neive with a southwest exposure. The vines in this plot are 48 years old. The average yield is 40 hl/ha. All Sottimano vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1970s. The fruit was destemmed and fermented for up to 60 days or left on the skins, with the pomace cap being regularly punched down during fermentation in open stainless steel fermentation stands. Since 2020, the wine has been aged in large, slightly conical botti. The aging period in barrels was around 24 months.

Colour

Brilliant, bright cherry red with a light rim.

Nose

2021 Barbaresco Fausoni has a wonderfully deep and appealing aroma. Sour cherry is noticeably prominent, but also leaves room for other, distinctly darker aromas. Plum, mulberry, almost sloe come to mind. It appears earthy and chalky. Reminiscent of chalky water or wet chalk. Subtle hints of undergrowth and resinous tree bark. It holds back its spiciness somewhat. Only faint notes of allspice and pepper emerge. A touch of rosemary and lovage provide a herbal kick.

Palate

Aromatically concentrated and underlined by fine-pored tannins, it makes an impressive opening. It moves lightly. The tannins are essential and perfectly balanced. This creates rough edges and an aromatic bond between the fruit and bitterness. Its cool undertone, its finesse, and its subtle length are convincing. Equally subtle, various herbs gradually build up, bringing plenty of spice and freshness: lovage, mint, parsley, and rosemary. White pepper and a hint of coffee also contribute.
