Sebastian Bordthäuser: The 2014 Currá is a classic Barbaresco with youthful, tart tannins and expansive fruit. With plenty of juice and smoothness, it captivates on the palate and is underpinned by aromas of bacon, bay leaf, and juniper. Its transparent freshness and delicate acidity make it the perfect Barbaresco for now—or while waiting until the 2016 vintages are ripe.

Wine Information

The Nebbiolo comes from the Currá vineyard in Neive. Currá covers 2.8 hectares with a south-southwest exposure. The vines are between 55 and 75 years old and planted on pure limestone. The average yield is 40 hl/ha. All Sottimano vineyards have been farmed organically since the early 1970s. The fruit was destemmed, fermented for up to three months, and left on the skins, with the pomace cap being regularly punched down during fermentation in open stainless steel fermentation stands. The wine was aged in François Frère barrels. Around 15% was new wood, the rest was one to four years old. The barrel aging period was around 24 months.

Nose

The 2019 »Currá« showcases the site’s typical notes of violets, anise and fennel seeds, a hint of bay leaves, and the finest cubeb pepper over a layer of juicy black and sour cherries, some plum, tobacco, and crushed lime. The wine appears transparent and clear.

Palate

On the palate, the vineyard and the vintage provide a double measure of nervous, agile tension in this fleshy, juicy Barbaresco. The tannins are taut, the structure firm and wiry; the wine is full of energy and excitement, full of dark, juicy fruits and subtle herbal, tobacco, and spicy nuances.
