Product description for Schätzel Riesling Pettenthal Auslese Grosse Lage 2023
Info
Kai Schätzel calls this 23er Auslese the purest of its time. Concentrated like a TBA, but fresh like a Kabinett. That sounds promising. The vines are located on extremely steep slopes on the Roter Hang. After the harvest, the whole grapes are pressed, and fermentation can begin spontaneously in a used 600l barrel. It matures in the barrel for eight months before being bottled early. 185g/l residual sugar is offset by a firm 13g/l acidity. Strong values for great drinking pleasure.
Colour
Bright straw yellow with green reflections
Nose
The 2023 Pettenthal Auslese from the Roter Hang makes an incredibly lean and straightforward impression. The first nose confirms its colour. It has a crystal-clear aroma dominated by ripe yellow apples, white peaches, and mirabelle plums. The fruits are all captivating, fluctuating between concentrated ripeness and crisp freshness. I also think I can subtly detect a hint of red fruit, which reminds me of raspberries and rose hips. The fruit is subtly joined by a touch of turmeric and hints of dried fruit. Marjoram and chervil provide a subtle herbal contrast.
Palate
On the palate, too, Kai Schätzel’s Auslese is light-footed and prancing. It glides over the tongue in quick steps, doing a few pirouettes. All around the fruit. Full of elegance. In the freestyle, a touch of spice and herbs. Another twist around the mirabelle plum. A jump. Step, step. Another twist around the peach. And then it all over again. Beautiful. Playfully light and animating.

Score: 96
The 2023 Riesling Pettenthal Auslese was made from raisined, dried-out fruit without any botrytis. Chamomile, tansy and red apple come together in a soothing but very fresh nose. The palate is sweet and reminds totally of herbal tisane, spiked with lemon peel, almost with a touch of candied lemon. Saltiness and acidity make the mouth water in this radiantly clear, elongated Riesling. Residual sweetness of around 155 g/L stands against 14.5 g/L of acidity. What a delicious, exciting thrill.
