Information about the wine

The La Rochelle vineyard in Moulin-à-Vent covers 19 hectares, of which the Chastels own 2.3 hectares. The site is located just west of the village center on deep, weathered granite. The vines of the Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, as it is fully known, are around 50 years old and yield between 25 and 35 hl/ha. After hand-picking and sorting, whole bunches were used. Undamaged grapes were placed at the bottom of the concrete cuboid, and crushed ones were placed on top, allowing the Gamay to undergo a semi-carbonic maceration for around 15 days. The wine was then aged for a year in used oak.

Colour

Medium-intense garnet red

Nose

The La Rochelle is a wonderfully clear and brightly aromatic 2019 Moulin-à-Vent. It is reminiscent of red currants and barberries, sour cherries and ripe raspberries, and has subtle notes of plums cooked down with a little vanilla and cinnamon.

Palate

On the palate, the wine combines slightly sweet and vanilla elements with notes of smoke, earth, and some dry wood. The Moulin-à-Vent possesses lively acidity and fine tannins. Despite its density of fruit, it is impressively transparent and clear, pleasantly robust to a certain extent, yet elegant.

Matured in used barrels, the 2019 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle unwinds in the glass with aromas of plums and sweet berry fruit framed by hints of sweet spices and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with youthfully chewy structuring tannins and lively acids, this will similarly reward a bit of patience.
