Beschreibung
Product description for Pian Dell’Orino Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2021
The 2021 Rosso comes from the Pian dell’Orino vineyards and the central part of Pian Bassolino and expresses the diversity of its soils: calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-grey Pliocene limestone, and flysch soils are the main sediments. The grapes grow at altitudes of 320 to 500 meters above sea level; the average age for this Rosso is 20 years. The grapes were rigorously sorted by hand in the vineyard, at the grape reception, and at the sorting table, followed by spontaneous fermentation. The wine macerated on the skins for almost two weeks before pressing and aging for 25 months in 25-hectoliter oak barrels.
Colour
Ruby red with medium coverage.
Nose
Black cherries, mulberries, blackberries, and a dash of cassis outline the precisely drawn nose of the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino from Pian dell’Orino. The expansive, generous fruit is complemented by mild spicy notes such as juniper, allspice, and a touch of light tobacco, along with delicate roasted notes. A fruit-driven and joyful Rosso with an unbridled, drink-it-all attitude.
Palate
Super-juicy on the first sip, its flow is fueled by the low-floral, dense tannins that define the wine’s entire texture. This Rosso drinks like a tailor-made product, rushing across the palate like lemmings into the abyss. The invigorating freshness of the vintage combines with the tart tannins—a rich, almost fleshy first sip with a youthful character and once again silky, polished tannins. An invigoratingly tart finish with an ethereal, fruity finish.

This beautiful wine will be released in March 2025 with 4,666 bottles produced. The Pian dell’Orino 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is extremely focused and precise. It remains a little closed at this young stage, but that quality gives us even more confidence in a successful bottle evolution. Fruit is sourced from various vineyard plots. There is a hint of greenness that should relax with time, and the wine shows tart cherry fruit, rye bread and a hint of red beer.

Just bottled two weeks ago, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a pretty blend of cedary spices, dried cherries and sage hints. This is cool-toned and racy in feel, with crisp red berry fruits and exotic spice that flourish toward the close. It leaves a coating of fine tannins and a pleasantly chewy sensation while tapering off with ample length and concentration. While incredibly young and still a bit shocked, the 2021 is packed full of potential.
