Wine Information

Peter Jakob Kühn’s vineyard, with the oldest vines, some up to 65 years old, is Sankt Nikolaus. The vineyard is located directly on the Rhine in Mittelheim, near the ferry to Ingelheim, and faces south with a gentle slope. The soil here is calcareous, sandy loess, partially interspersed with terrace sediments and rocks from the Alzey Formation (sea sand). After hand-picking, the whole grapes were pressed for several hours, the must fermented spontaneously, and the wine, without altering the natural composition of the must, aged on the full lees for 16 months in traditional single-barrel and double-barrel casks (1,200 l and 2,400 l).

Nose

The 2022 Mittelheimer Sankt Nikolaus is a classic Kühn wine with two poles. One pole is slightly reductive with a touch of smoke and stone, the other slightly oxidative with notes of crumbly apple and apple peel, hops, and yeast. In between are notes of lemon oil, some blond tobacco, patisserie, herbs, and apricots.

Palate

On the palate, the Großes Gewächs appears airy and floatingly light, which is only one side of the coin, as the other is earthy and offers a certain stoniness and power. The Sankt Nikolaus is juicy and salty, piquant and lively with deep energy and intensity, a taut yet charming acidity, and a mouthwatering saltiness on the finish.

The 2022 Riesling Mittelheimer Sankt Nikolaus Grosses Gewächs opens with a mix of dried apple and crushed dried yarrow, leading onto an ultra-light, bright body that nonetheless has concentration. A creamy gentleness is informed by lemon peel and pith, getting more insistent and pervasive toward the dry finish. A lovely herbal lift rises again on the close. (Bone-dry)
