Wine Information

Kühn’s portion of the Hallgartener Jungfer lies directly above the Doosberg at around 220 meters above sea level. The soil is erosion material from the Rheingau Mountains with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess clay. Slightly inclined to the southeast, the vineyard is somewhat cooler than the Doosberg. This Großes Gewächs (Great Growth) was aged in specially purchased Stockinger wooden barrels. The wine from the Hallgartener Jungfer is aged in the same barrel every year, which means the wood influence is barely noticeable.

Nose

The 2021 Riesling from the Hallgartener Jungfer opens with fresh, citrus notes mixed with a hint of smoke and tobacco. Overlying this is the scent of crushed slate and white flowers.

Palate

On the palate, the Großes Gewächs is deep, juicy, and energetic, with notes of rock, salt, lemon zest, and stone fruit. The Riesling is simultaneously creamy and silky on the palate, with taut and firm extract and acidity. The Riesling Jungfer is a precise wine with plenty of juice and impressive length.

The 2021 Riesling Hallgartener Jungfer Grosses Gewächs was grown on mica schist mixed with quartzite. The nose has a touch of reductive flint but then relaxes into lemons, green apples and creamy yeast. The palate is juicy, slender, concentrated and bouncy with yeast. It’s serene, bright, absolutely honing on a central streak of ripe lemon and an intense, ocean-like umami note. There is a slight diffusion with lactic notes, but the lemony brightness shines. Intense, long, slender, resonant with long-lasting lemon notions. (Bone-dry)
