Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Weisser Burgunder “Mandelberg” GG 2021 (bio)
Information about the wine
The Mandelberg is located southwest of Birkweiler and only 500 meters from the Kastanienbusch. The plots used for the wine are located at around 250 meters above sea level and face southeast. The elevation that stretches from the Hohenberg to the Rauhberg is a fault of the Rhine Graben, with Rotliegend from the Permian and Bunter Sandstone, Muschelkalk, and Keuper from the Triassic. The Weißburgunder grows primarily in Muschelkalk, which is interspersed with clay and is somewhat deeper than the comparable Im Sonnenschein site. The wine was matured after slow pressing and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel.
Colour
Light to medium straw yellow
Nose
The Weißburgunder Mandelberg GG 2021 appears open and inviting on the nose, with a blend of local and tropical fruits topped with cream. White peaches, a hint of papaya, and mango combine with herbal notes, yeast, and a powder made from ground stone. The fruit is not overly bold, but rather delicate and refined.
Palate
On the palate, the Mandelberg initially becomes juicy and silky, and one would expect a good portion of fruit sweetness. But far from it. The wine builds up momentum, becoming powerful, expansive, deep, and complex, yet bone-dry with chalky minerality, saltiness, and a phenolic grip on the palate. The wine is still at the very beginning of its development and has a lot of potential.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94+
From a cooler, east-facing slope on Muschelkalk limestone soils and vinified in stainless steel, the 2021 Mandelberg Weisser Burgunder GG opens with a pure, fresh, elegant and flinty bouquet with lemon juice notes. Full-bodied, rich and generous on the palate, this is an intense but elegant and refreshing Pinot Blanc with fine tannins and lingering mineral tension and salinity. It’s not as pure or puristic as the Im Sonnenschein, but it’s richer and more textural. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August and at the domaine in November 2022.
