Origin

According to DNA analysis last conducted in 2013, Neuburger is presumably a natural cross between Roter Veltliner and Silvaner. In Austria, around 500 hectares are planted with this grape variety. Nikolaihof cultivates Neuburger in the “Bischofpoint” and “Im Weingebirge” vineyards. “Bischofpoint” comprises 36 hectares in Mautern and Baumgarten. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 246 to 340 meters, facing north-northeast, and is characterized by rigol soil with loess and clay. “Im Weingebirge” is a “Ried within a Ried” and belongs to the Mautern Ried “Alte Point.” The site covers a full six hectares and extends northwards from 206 to 225 meters up the slope. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which here and there reaches the surface. The topsoil consists of clay and, above all, loess.

Nose

Many different aromas dance their own unique accord on the nose, but are quite successful. At first, the scent is reminiscent of Baden Silvaner or Weißburgunder. The 2014 vintage is also very mature in its aromas due to its reduced acidity. In addition to vegetal notes, mushrooms, confit onions, hay, and straw are also detectable.

Palate

Full-bodied, somewhat expansive with vegetal, bitter tones that seem to come from tannins that are not yet ripe. A lightweight with character, ideal with poultry or fish ragout with butter and cream.

The 2014 Neuburger opens with a clear, ripe and complex aroma of flint, stones, ripe apples, almonds, biscuits and stone fruits. Medium-bodied, fresh and nicely pure on the palate this, is a remarkably vital and finesse-full Neuburger with grip, tension and lemon flavors in the finish.
