Product description for Nikolaihof Klause am Berg, Riesling trocken 2012 (bio)
Archive Release 2024. The “Klause” is a plot within the Steiner “Gaisberg,” not an official vineyard. Named after the hermitage there, the small, terraced “Klause” encompasses the uppermost part of the 5.7 hectares of the Gaisberg. The Gaisberg vineyard lies at an elevation of 230 to 330 meters above sea level at the peak and crest of the mountain, facing southeast and well-ventilated. The substratum consists of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist, and amphibolite. The vineyard name has been documented since 1215. The Klause is largely surrounded by forest, creating a special microclimate.
Colour
Bright, ripe lemon yellow
Nose
Striking, broad aromas with ripe fruit, herbs, and vegetables with sweet notes. Golden yellow stone fruit, honeydew melon, grapefruit, snow peas, carrots, tarragon, lemon balm. All wrapped up in a fine, delicate fragrance.
Palate
Even after a decade, the light-footed, exciting body offers freshness and character with its still-present acidity. This, in turn, remains very well packaged and beautifully integrated. Concentration is not a foreign word here; the round taste is balanced, dense, and rich. Plenty of potential right up to the last sip.

The white to yellow-golden colored 2012 Klause am Berg Riesling Privat is deep, precise and fresh on the nose despite its concentration, with ripe and intense, also stewed stone fruit aromas that intermingle with the saline and flinty terroir notes of this top vineyard. The wine is dense and intensely aromatic on the palate, again with stewed stone fruit aromas and the salinity and crystallinity of the dark bedrock of the Klause. This is a rich yet elegant and stimulating Riesling with a long, savory and persistently grippy, mineral finish. This is an excellent, still youthful and refreshing wine of extraordinary quality. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
The “Klause” is a district within the Steiner Gaisberg and thus not an official vineyard (ried). The small, terraced Klause is named after the hermitage there and covers the uppermost part of the 5.7 hectares of the Gaisberg, a cru that is located at an altitude of 230 to 330 meters above sea level at the top and along the ridge of the mountain, facing southeast and well ventilated. The bedrock consists of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist and amphibolite. The name of the vineyard has been documented since 1215. The hermitage is largely surrounded by forest, which results in a special microclimate.
