Product description for Nikolaihof Im Weingebirge, Grüner Veltliner Federspiel trocken 2006 (bio)
Cork closure – Archive Release 2024.
Origin
The “Im Weingebirge” vineyard is a so-called “vineyard within a vineyard.” It belongs to the “Alte Point” vineyard and borders the “Strudel” and “Süßenberg” vineyards above Mautern. The site covers a full six hectares and extends northwards from 206 to 225 meters up the slope. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which here and there reaches the surface. The topsoil consists of clay and primarily loess.
Colour
Light, amazingly fresh grapefruit yellow.
Nose
The still youthful, opulent nose has a variety of fruity, vegetal, and spicy aromas. A broad bouquet of autumnal blossoms, herbs, and fruits. Asters, purslane, daisies, carrots, celery, chestnuts, pumpkin, lovage, oregano, and much more if you wait patiently and invest time in the glass.
Palate
You can unmistakably sense the depth and density of this wine, thinking of a still youthful, drinkable wine that, thanks to its powerful structure and intense, complex mouthfeel, could also be of a higher quality, an emerald of a more modern winemaking style. A small, great, and multifaceted wine from A to Z. Despite the lightness on the palate, the real winners here are the richness and complexity of the wine when it comes to drinking pleasure.

The 2006 Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Im Weingebirge – like this year’s Hefeabzug – offers a ripe and complex set of flavors with the lightness and sheer refreshment that are part and parcel of Federspiel. Green bean, nutmeg, sage, clover, and salad greens on the nose lead to a juicy, refined palate with clarity and cut. Subtle suggestions of walnut oil, along with nutmeg, coffee, and the faint bitterness of greens and wet stone inform the long and lip-smacking finish. _x000D_

The 2006 collection here is a triumph, confirming that young Nikolaus Saahs is capable of preserving if not enhancing the high standards and distinctive style of his family’s wines. Even the most understated bottlings – perhaps those in particular – make a completely convincing statement. (For a more “complete Nikolaihof experience,” I have listed and reviewed the wines in the order in which they were presented to me when I first tasted them in June.)_x000D_
